A VISIT TO THE VET

LESSON # 3

Lesson Overview: Students will become aware of the important part a veterinarian plays in the well-being of a pet's life.  An annual checkup provides a great opportunity to ask your veterinarian questions about your pet's health.  An annual field trip to the veterinarian is vital your pets' health.  Your veterinarian should also update your pet's vaccinations, discuss your pet's diet, and recommend any necessary dental care and he or she will help you investigate and resolve any potential health problems.

2. Complete an online tutorial "A Vet's Role"

3. Complete an Informational Log (teacher-made material)

Activities

1. Students will complete the first two parts of a KWL chart on what is a veterinarian's job.

2. Using a smart board or other form of projection teacher visits The American Veterinary Medicine Association's website to complete a kids tutorial on subject matter.

Homework

Write a small story telling of a time you recall visiting the veterinarian or ask an adult to tell you about their visit to a vet

Extension

Divide children into groups. Ask them to create an invention that would make their pet's lives easier or more fun.

Give them an example of a real pet invention such as the "doggie door" which allows a pet to go outside and come back in freely.

Students brainstorm and turn in a description and illustration of their pet's invention. One student from group will present their invention to the entire class.
