How It Works:
This unit is designed to teach elementary students the responsibilities
of owning a pet while encouraging students to acquire a greater respect for
the intrinsic value and worth of animals. The activities will provide
student with understanding concerning the selection, care, training and
health of their pet. Children will come to realize that pets are dependent
on humans to meet their needs. Students will examine the benefits of pet
adoption and learn to make a good match between pets and potential pet
owners. Pets provide many positive experiences for children, including
development of self-esteem and compassion.
Standards:
The students will lean about character education and civic
responsibilities. Discuss methods for resolving community conflicts.
Understand that people in communities rely on each other and are
interdependent. Discuss skills needed to take care of a pet and recognize
the importance of pet ownership. The students will write and share
information, site examples of inform a specific audience and address key
questions, issues, or situations.

Overall:
The intent of this project is to teach students that owning a pet is a
lifetime commitment. It is important for students to understand that owning
a pet involves the entire family; pets need love, attention and medical care
for their entire life. Important questions need to be answered before
acquiring a pet; such as the size of the home and the people who will be
responsible for the pet. As well as making the decision to purchase or adopt
a pet.
Tips:
Have all printable worksheets ready for students. Check all the internet
links prior to beginning unit. Make sure all students are computer
literature and can independently navigate through the internet; if not
assign a knowledgeable students as partners of those students who are
computer novice. Share and explain all rubrics used to access student work

About the Teacher:
Miriam Gomez has been teaching in the Miami-Dade Public School System for
13 years. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Nova
Southeastern University. She is a National Board Certified Teacher in
Library Media. Ms. Gomez provides information literacy skills and computer
training to students. She also teaches an advance Academic Excellence
Program before school. As an active participant of Citibank FamilyTech
Program, she was an Impact II Disseminator at the 2004 conference; and has
received and adapted several grants. Miriam provides opportunities for the
entire student sin her school to be involved in technology projects as part
of their information literacy curriculum.
