How It Works:
This Unit is an integrated curriculum that incorporates skills across
discipline areas that include language arts, mathematics, social studies,
writing, geography, art, technology, and information literacy skills.
Students will understand why distinctive foods are used in different
households depending on the ethnicity of the family involved. The goal of
this unit is to focus on the fact that our background and our environment
play an important role in what and how we eat.
Standards:
The students will analyze the diverse foods and spices used around the
world in various cuisines. The students will study the relationships between
geographic location and food source. The students will examine the
importance of spices upon a world region. The students will write and share
information, inform a specific audience and address key questions, issues,
or situations

“Everybody Serves Soup” by Norah Nooley, additional literature resources,
computer and internet access.

Students:
The project is suitable for intermediate students in Elementary grades.
Students need to have basic computer and internet research skills.
Overall:
The intent of this project is to develop awareness that culture,
geographic location affects the foods, and spices people use to cook at
home, while providing useful lessons that allow students to understand the
influences of various social values. The project does this through
literature, internet access and the integration of multimedia. The lessons
are designed to incorporate other subject areas. The activities provided
keep the students enthusiastic about learning more about ethnic culinary
traditions which profiles our communities and neighborhoods in the United
States today.
Tips:
Have all printable worksheets ready for students. Check all the internet
links prior to beginning unit. Make sure all students are computer
literature and can independently navigate through the internet; if not
assign a knowledgeable students as partners of those students who are
computer novice. Share and explain all rubrics used to access student work.

About the Teacher:
Miriam Gomez has been teaching in the Miami-Dade Public School System for
13 years. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Nova
Southeastern University. She is a National Board Certified Teacher in
Library Media. Ms. Gomez provides information literacy skills and computer
training to students and staff. She also teaches an advance Academic
Excellence Program before school. As an active participant of Citibank
FamilyTech Program, she was an Impact II Disseminator at the 2004
conference; and has received and adapted several grants. Miriam provides
opportunities for the entire student sin her school to be involved in
technology projects as part of their information literacy curriculum.
