Be A Perfect Person in Just Three Days - Lesson 6

 

Objective: Students will be able to:

* use simple strategies to determine meaning and increase vocabulary for reading including use of multiple meanings, synonyms, antonyms and word relations

 * read text and determine the main idea, identify relevant supporting details

* identify the cause (Why did it happen?) to the effect (What happened?)      

Materials:

* Be A Perfect Person in Just Three Days by Stephen Manes

* White piece of paper

* Computer with Internet and word processing

* Worksheet (vocabulary)

* Worksheet (cause and effect)

* Worksheet (cloze activity)

Vocabulary:  shattered, brighten, save, ridiculous, auditorium

Working with words: The teacher will introduce how to use punctuation marks by writing samples on the board, then monitor as students make a list of punctuation marks they find in chapter six.  Students will go online to Student Fun and complete activities on punctuation marks.

Activity: The teacher will...

1. Begin lesson by having the students share their prediction of chapter six. Enter predictions into computer-generated journal.

2. Review vocabulary words and definitions from chapter five.

3. Introduce new vocabulary words and definitions for chapter six.

4. Give each student a white piece of paper, and have them fold it into six pieces. Students can also use word processing and create a table with two columns and three rows as their boxes; then type, add clip art and graphics.

5. Have students write each vocabulary word, definition and illustration in each box.

6. Read and discuss chapter six.

7. Review what cause and effect is and discuss.

8. Have the students complete a worksheet on cause and effect (print out the worksheet). (20 minutes)

9. Have the students go online to The Dictionary Plus to find synonyms and antonyms for their vocabulary words.

10. Have the students go online to do a vocabulary activity, print out the worksheet and complete it.

Evaluation: Students will work in pairs to complete a cloze activity (print out the worksheet) using their book, worksheet on cause and effect and answer the following questions:

* What was Dr. Silverfish's real opinion about perfect people?

* How had Milo changed, even though he was just as imperfect as he was before he read the book?

* Why was Milo disappointed that he didn't become perfect?

* Why were his teammates angry at him?

Home Learning:

* Students will use word processor to type their vocabulary words in ABC order and write a sentence for each word.

* Students will go online to Discovery Kids to create a crossword puzzle with their vocabulary words.

* Students will go online to do a comprehension activity, print out the worksheet and complete it.
