Freckle Juice - Lesson 6

Objective: Students will be able to:

* identify vocabulary

* identify story elements (Title, Author, Setting, Characters, Problem, Events one, two and three and Solution) by using a story map

* identify the cause (Why did it happen?) to the effect (What happened?)

* identify between a fact and an opinion

* read and organize information for a variety of purposes, including making a report

Materials:

* Story Map

* Worksheet (cause and effect)

* Worksheet (cloze activity)

Activity: The teacher will...

1. begin lesson by reviewing vocabulary words and definitions

2. review the events of the story and have a discussion with the class

3. review what cause and effect is and discuss

4. review the differences between a fact and an opinion

5. printout a story map (optional) and the students will work in pairs to complete it (30 minutes)

6. have the students complete a worksheet on cause and effect (print out the worksheet). (20 minutes)

7. have the students to complete a worksheet on fact and opinion (print out the worksheet) (15 minutes)

8. allow students to share their story map with another pair

9. if time permits allow 2-3 pairs to share their story map

10. have the students go online to Puzzle Maker and create crossword puzzles and word searches using selected vocabulary words from the entire unit

11. have the students go online to Education World to get ideas on how to publish different book reports

Evaluation: Students will do a story map, worksheet on cause and effect, and a worksheet on fact and opinion.

Home Learning:

* Students will complete a FRECKLE JUICE acronym poem on the computer.

* Students can go online to play a concentration game or printout a word search using our vocabulary words.

* Students will research (Education World) and begin to write a book report.
