Write Away

How It Works:
Write Away
is a unit designed to teach students various methods of writing and to be aware of its importance in their lives. One of the activities is to write a letter of recommendation to "apply for a job." The letter needs to be convincing in order to "compete" with all the other applicants.

The lesson entitled Follow the Directions is geared toward writing clear and concise directions. The plan is to give students the opportunity to write freely using their computer skills as well as their ability to research online. There are no specific prompts to this type of writing thus enabling the students to be as creative as possible.

Standards:
Uses a word processing program.
Uses a search engine to find information online.
Plans the organization of ideas generated by prewriting.
Combines related ideas into paragraph form using supporting examples, elaboration and evidence.
Writes final edited pieces.

Software Materials Used:
Desktop publishing program, scanner (optional)

Keywords:
fourth grade, fifth grade, writing, directions, job applications, menus, poetry, resume, poetry, acrostic, cinquain, novelette

Students:
There are 32 students in my 5th grade class. They are of various exceptionalities. Several of the lessons were performed in small groups which assisted those who needed extra help. Any group of students would be suitable for these lessons.

Overall:
The students become excited about these lessons because they include activities that relate to real life. Seeing their novelette online is a thrill. They also learn the need to write clearly when applying for a job. The unit also gives poetry writing a new edge to see it produced on the computer adding various clip arts and photos.

Tips:
Have students work in pairs or small groups. They can edit each others' work. Conduct a life-ike job interview after all applications have been turned in.
