Lesson 3 - Arthur Meets the President

 

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

* identify vocabulary

* tell the differences and similarities between Washington, D.C. and Miami, FL  (compare & contrast)

* write a descriptive paragraph

Materials:

Books:  Arthur Meets The President by Marc Brown

Venn Diagram

Activities:

1.  Have students go on line and research Washington, D.C. and Miami, FL.

2.  Students will compare weather, culture, population and foods.

3.  Review vocabulary.

4.  Students will go online to Puzzle Maker to create a word search puzzle using the vocabulary words.

5.  Demonstrate a Venn Diagram (compare & contrast) to the class and students can go on line to Venn Diagram to look at the graphic organizer that will help the students see more clearly the similarities and the differences between Washington D.C.... and Miami.

6.  Students can look online to Google, Yahooligans, Ask Jeeves, and Fact Monster to learn more information on different patterns of weather.

7.  Students will use a questionnaire to help them compare/contrast Miami to Washington ,D.C.

8.  Have each student choose which place they would rather live, Washington, D.C.. or Miami, FL and write a descriptive paragraph in which they describe in detail about which place they chose and why..

9.  Allow the students to share their paragraph and have their classmates try to guess which weather pattern or condition they are describing.

Evaluation:

Students completed Venn Diagram.

Students completed descriptive paragraph on which place they chose to live.

Home Learning:

Students will go online to complete a worksheet on their vocabulary words.

Students will go online to a comprehension activity, print out the worksheet and complete it.
