Patterns - Here, There & Everywhere
Lesson Three
Duration
One class period
Objectives
Students will recognize and pick-out patterns
Students will create patterns using pattern blocks
Materials
pattern blocks, crayons, "My
Pattern Worksheet"
Vocabulary
pattern unit
cell geometry
Activities
Read Patterns by Henry Pluckrose, discuss book and introduce the meaning of "unit cell."
Students need to understand this concept in order to
determine what a pattern is. The repeatability of the unit cell, is
important to recognize by the students in order to create a pattern of their
own.
After discussion students will complete the "My Pattern" worksheet.
After completion of the worksheet pair students in groups of two or three and distribute pattern blocks. Instruct students to work together to create patterns with more than one unit cell.
Assessment
Student worksheet and teacher observation of time on task, understanding and
collaboration.
Home Learning
Students bring an article from home (could be an item of clothing)
which
contains a pattern to share and discuss.
