Objectives:
- Students identify the characteristics of animals who
live in the farm.
- Students understand how animals are used to produce
goods.

Procedures:
- Introduce this lesson by reading aloud No
Milk! by Jennifer A. Ericsson. After discussing the story, ask students
whether or not they think it would be a big deal if the cow in the story -- or any cow
were never able to give milk again. Why or why not?
- Brainstorm a list of all the different foods
that are made from milk, such as butter, cheese, yogurt, sour cream, whipped cream, and
ice cream.
- After seeing the list of dairy foods, do any
of your students want to change their opinions? Summarize the discussion by
explaining that all foods that are made from milk are called dairy products.
- Begin a class discussion explaining that
there are special kinds of cows, called dairy cows, that are bred just to give milk.
- Next begin a discussion on how milk is made.
Use the How Milk is Made information sheet to assist you.
- Visit The Story of Milk on the Internet. It is
a virtual tour of how milk is made. (teachers or teacher assistants have to read the
sentences to students)
Evaluation:
- Students will use Kid Pix to create a slide
show on the process of how milk is made, from the cows eating lots of food to the milk
being bought at the store. Write the steps on the board out of order on
How Milk is Made and have students place them in
order in their Kid Pix slide show. Students should type the sentence and create an
illustration to go with the sentence.
Extension Activities:
- Explain to students that the butter we use
everyday is made from milk in factories. Divide the class into small groups and tell
them they are going to work together to make their own butter.
- Have students listen to the story Cat Went Moo
on the Internet. This is a funny story about a cow and a cat that get mixed up.
It includes audio so students can listen and follow along to the words.
Home Learning:
- Students will write about their favorite type
of milk they like to drink (chocolate, white or strawberry) using any word processing
program.
