Making Butter
Materials
Clean, small glass jars with lids
Heavy cream
Crackers or slices of bread
Give each group a jar. Pour about half a cup of cream into each group’s jar. Make sure the lids are screwed on tightly. Tell children to take turns vigorously shaking the jars. After a few minutes, point out how the cream has separated into two parts: a liquid (buttermilk) and solid grains of butter. Have children continue to shake the jars until the grains form a solid lump of butter. Pour off the liquid and invite children to spread their "best butter" on the crackers or bread.
