Chocolate Newsletter- Lesson Three
Component: Language Arts
Objectives:
Uses prewriting strategies such as clustering, reading, taking notes
Uses standard written English
Maintains a reading/writing portfolio
Writes in the top to bottom style
Uses electronic technology to create information
Materials: Computer with online capabilities, scanner (optional)
Procedure: 1) Students will work in groups and choose one
character from the story.
2) Each group will make a Character
Chart describing the character by
writing as many adjectives and descriptive terms as possible.
3) Each student in the group will write a short article adding an anecdote
(invented) about the character.
4) The groups will then read each article and choose the best one,
two, or more
to combine into a final article.
5) The articles will then by typed or cut and pasted into the newsletter.
6) Clip art may be added. Edit and publish (See sites to visit.)
How To Make A Newsletter
Microsoft Works
1) Click on Microsoft Works
2) Click Newsletter
3) Click on Yes, run the Task Wizard
4) Click Create It
5) Fill in the Information
6) Edit and publish
Evaluation: Students will be evaluated using a Newsletter Writing Rubric.
Homework: Write an article from a "reader" of the
newsletter with an opinion about the
writer's comments, such as Augustus Gloop's obesity.
Extension Activities:
Design and produce a brochure about chocolate.
Create a board game on the computer that relates to the characters and story line.
Write a short story changing the ending, with the owner of the factory being one of the other characters.
