The Geography of Japan

The Japanese islands, hemmed in on all sides by the seas, are mountainous and prone to earthquakes. Rivers, springs, and natural ports abound. Every centimeter of arable land must be cultivated in order to supply the diet staple of rice. Hence, sprawling estates do not exist. Much of the land is heavily forested. Summers are torrid and winter brings heavy wet snows.
