About the Teacher
Sarah Nixon
sarahnixon102@yahoo.co.uk
Sarah Nixon is in her second year of teaching geography at St Marylebone School, borough of Westminster. The school is an 11-18 years old, church comprehensive school for girls. She also teaches GNVQ Part 1 IT to year 9 students. Sarah is currently also working on developing her school geography intranet site.

Overview
This series of lessons is merely an introduction based on the time allowance of six, forty minute lessons. A lot more can be done on this topic depending on the time available and the interest of the group. It is also a topic that lends itself to discussions and debates, which can hopefully develop out of the ICT work. World Development is a very topical issue with countless new case studies that can be explored. The ideas suggested in this scheme can also just be used as a framework on which to build in your own examples and use new Internet sites as you come across them.

Curriculum Addressed
This series of lessons will start to address the following National Curriculum guidelines:
6i) Development including:

i Ways of identifying differences in development within and between countries
ii Effects of differences in development on the quality of life of different groups of people
iii Factors, including the interdependence of countries, which influence development

It is hoped students will also gain some of these skills, knowledge and understanding:

2a To use an extended geographical vocabulary
2d To select and use secondary sources of evidence (ICT based sources)
2f To communicate in different ways, including ICT
2g Decision making skills, including using ICT

This series of lessons also helps to address the NC guidelines on the use of information and communication technology across the curriculum, especially 1, 2a,b,c

What You Need
Time requirements: 5- 6 lessons if each lesson on average is 40 minutes.

Software and materials needed: Access to the Internet, Microsoft word or a similar word processing package; Excel and access to a printer. Power point and a projector would be useful but not essential.

The Students
This series of 5 lessons is aimed at the top end of Key Stage 3, it was designed with Year 9 in mind. However top ability Year 7 & 8 use it although it may need some extra reinforcement. The lessons work as a series but can also work independently. Some could be used for GCSE revision or as an extension to lower Key Stage 3 years.

Aims & Objectives
