Lesson 3

Aims: Importing photos to be used for backgrounds and editing pictures to create compositions.

1. Students will learn how to import a background photo.

2. Students will learn how to add an edited photo.

3. Students will learn how to save the composition as one photo.

4. Students will analyze what contributes to “good “ composition in a photograph/postcard and self evaluate their work.

Grade Level: 7th grade computer classes

Estimated Time: 2 - 4 sessions

Setting: Computer classroom

Interdisciplinary areas: Technology, Art

Vocabulary: edit, import, export, composition,

Motivation:

Introduce Concept:

1. Have you ever had your picture taken in a photo booth where you have it printed on the cover of a famous magazine? (Teacher could have made a sample of magazine cover and the postcard project.)

Pivotal Questions:

-Why do people buy these photo covers?

-How do you think they are produced?

-Are they created by real magazines publishers? Why not?

2. Show students how to copy their “saved” background photos using monitor.

3. Show students how to open the HyperStudio stack with the edited group picture.

4. Show students how to add a new HyperStudio card and paste the background on it using the pull down menu. Demonstrate.

5. Demonstrate how to copy the edited group picture and place it on the background scene to make it look as though they had had their pictures taken in this distant site. (As long as the group picture has the selection tool around it, the picture can be moved around)

6. After placing, click on the background to attach it. If you need to change the placement UNDO and reposition. When students are satisfied with their new composite picture they are to go to File -Export the screen. [This will save the completed project as a pict. file.]

7. Students name the file at this time (e.g. Initials or last name). The editing process is complete.

Edited background with group photo

Evaluation:

How do we combine a background and edited picture?

What can we do to correct the position of the group picture on the background?

How do we save the completed picture?

How can we recognize a good and effective composition?
