INTRODUCTION TASK PROCESS RESOURCES CONCLUSION EVALUATION CREDITS TEACHER

This unit is designed for students in third grade as part of the Computer Lab program at P.S. 101 in Brooklyn, New York. The unit can easily be adapted for students in grades four through twelve and in a classroom setting. Since my students work in the computer lab for 45 minutes, once a week, this unit would take about three or four months to complete. In a classroom setting, one month to six weeks might be needed to complete the unit.

The unit makes use of components of balanced literacy and the workshop model. Before students begin to plan out their group mysteries, the teacher might model how to use the story planner to brainstorm ideas. The teacher shares the pen as a class mystery story is developed. Students then work cooperatively in groups and use peer evaluation as well as teacher evaluation during conference time to assess their group mystery.
