UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS OF POETRY

 

The Ode
The Ode is an elaborate lyric verse that deals seriously with a dignified theme. Students should be able to understand the topics that are best suited to this form.

 

 

Aim: Introduction to The Ode

Objective: Students will be able to understand the structure of the ode and write about its tone and theme.

Procedure:

  1. Hand out The Ode worksheet.
  2. Read background of the Ode and complete activity.
  3. Hand out Ode to Autumn, by John Keats.
  4. Ask two students to read the poem aloud.
  5. Answer questions as a class. Students should break apart the poem directly on the page. See sample.
  6. Students should write explication of poem in class or for HW.
  7. For extra credit, students may want to write their own Ode. See sample format.
  8. Note to Teacher: Students should understand the grandiosity involved in the Ode and see it as a poetic form that is related to major ideas. They should understand that the poet sees this object of his or her affection as an amazing thing.
