Lesson One

Aim: What are the different parts of a school newspaper?

Objective: Students will be able to

Materials Needed:

Do Now:

Instructional Activities:

1. Illicit Do Now answers from the students. Use a semantic web  to display answers for each question on the board.

2. In groups of three students, distribute copies of a section of a school newspaper. Each group will work with group members to explore the information in the section they have been assigned. Have students discuss and write down in their notebooks the different parts they notice in their section of the newspaper. Each group will report to the class what they noticed in the newspaper.

3. Students will be instructed to look at different titles/topics written in the newspaper. Students will choose three titles they find in the newspaper. Using a worksheet, students will make and write predictions about each article based on the article's title.

4. Each group will share a title they selected from their newspaper section and their predictions about the article.

5. Students will turn to page 69 in their Turning Points book. Since students already read the article, remind them what is required in order to write a news article (The 5 W questions). Review with students what the 5 questions are, and why they are important when writing a news article.

Homework assignment:

Distribute a copy of a newspaper article. Students will read the article and answer the 5 W questions for the article:

(This will help students understand the organization needed in a news article)
