Day 2: Scout

Aim: What is Scout like and how does she change throughout the book?

Objective: Students will understand Scout's character traits and how and why she changes throughout the book.

Procedure:

  1. Fill out character map (page 14) for Scout, listing evidence and page numbers for chapters 1-6 (Teacher should lead students to see that Scout is a bit naïve at the beginning of the story. She understands that there is racism, but in a very pure and unaffected way. To her, the major differences between people are whether they are good or bad).
  2. Based on Scout's descriptions, fill out Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the Ewells and the Cunninghams. Ewells: not respectful, kids do not go to school, father drinks, hunt out of season and break other laws. Cunninghams: respectable, kids go to school when they can, father is sober hard worker, do not break laws. Both: Poor, White, Farmers.
  3. Write on the board: How does Scout learn about the injustices in Maycomb?
  4. Teacher should print out and hang passages( 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 ) around the room (or direct students to view them on computer).
  5. Teacher should hand out Scout's Awareness worksheet and direct students to fill in as they read passages.
  6. Review worksheet and final question.
