Overview: Students
will use the Internet to find important events in the areas of politics, religion,art,
literature or music, and science that occurred during the life span of the explorer
they have researched. They will create a word document using a word processing
program to display on the classroom timeline.
Instructional
Objectives: Students will:
- Use the Internet to find important
events in the life span of an explorer
- Download and/or save graphics
from the Internet
- Use a word processing program
to make a document with graphics
Time
Required: Two or three 45-60
minute class periods
Advance
Preparation and prerequisite knowledge/skills:
- Students should know how to use
the Internet to find information
- Students should know how to copy,
save, and cite graphics from the Internet
- Students should know how to format,
add text, save, print and insert graphics into a word processing document
Materials:
- Computer with Internet access
connected to a printer

- Teacher explains the meaning
of major events in politics, art, music, literature and science
- Give examples of important events
and discoveries that students might use
- Science: Nicolaus Copernicus

- Explain the word documents requirements
- Eight facts presented in bullet form about one major event or discovery
in the area of politics, science, religion or art, literature, and music
- Picture or graphic representative of the event
- Demonstrate how to use the HyperHistory web site for initial research at

- Students use the Internet to
find at least three other important events that happened in the years of the
explorer's life in the areas of religion, politics, science, and art, literature

) is a good place to start
- Students choose one area to research
- Students check with the teacher so that there are no duplications in the
class
- Research and take notes
- Save graphics from the research
- Make the word processing document
- Print the document
- Share with the class before adding to the class timeline

Homework and Extensions:
Homework: Students use the social
studies text, encyclopedia, or library book to find additional information about
the event.
Extension: Make a Power Point slide
using the same text and graphics as the word document to be added to the class
