LESSON 1- WHAT IS ASTROLOGY?

AIMS: 

1.  What is the history of astrology?

2.  What is the mythology associated with astrology?

3.  To create drawings of the astrological signs.

MOTIVATION:

1.  Show  the following pictures taken from http://jksalescompany.com/dw/zodiacsigns.html  and ask the children what they know about them.

aries-mars taurus-venus gemini-mercury cancer-moon
leo-sun virgo-mercury libra-venus scorpio-pluto
sagittarius-jupiter capricorn-saturn aquarius-uranus pisces-neptune

2.  Create a KWL chart on astrology like the one below:

K W L
It has to do with the stars. What is the history of the astrological signs?  
There are 12 signs. What are the twelve signs?  
Chinese people have different signs. What is the meaning of each sign?  
Some of the signs are of animals. Why are animals used as some of the signs?  
People born under a certain sign are supposed to have those character traits. What are the character traits associated with each sign?  
Some of the signs are found in the constellations. Where are the signs found in the stars?  
The signs can predict your future. What are horoscopes?  

 

PROCEDURE:

1.   Determine what the 12 signs of the Zodiac are and place the children into groups according to their same astrological sign.

2.   Have children research the history of astrology in books, encyclopedias, and on the Internet.  Some good Internet sites for this are: http://astrologyparlor.com/features/history-astrology.html

3.  Have students create drawings of the astrological signs using KidPix and write the mythology associated with that sign. 

For the drawings the children created, click on the astrological sign that it corresponds to.
