How It Works:
This unit is designed to teach elementary students background knowledge
about fire, its use and its dangers. The lessons discuss fire safety, family
escape plan, smoke alarm, potential fire hazards at home and during the
holiday season as well as a visit to a local fire station.
Standards:
The students will lean about fire safety. Identify the 3 physical states
of fuels and what is needed for a fire to ignite. Students learn about the
fire department’s role in the community. Discuss procedures for developing a
home escape route and the importance of early fire warning

Students:
The students will identify exit signs, determine what is smoke,
familiarize themselves with firefighter’s tools and equipment, determine
fire department’s role in our community, understand the importance of an
escape route and meeting place, learn what is needed for a fire to ignite
and burn and the importance of early fire warning.
Overall:
The intent of this project is to teach students two main messages “fire is
dangerous” and “one must be prepared before the fire strikes”. The students
learn life saving techniques that will help them escape the perils of a
fire.
Tips:
Have all printable worksheets ready for students. Check all the internet
links prior to beginning unit. Make sure all students are computer
literature and can independently navigate through the internet; if not
assign a knowledgeable students as partners of those students who are
computer novice. Share and explain all rubrics used to access student work.

About the Teacher:
Miriam Gomez has been teaching in the Miami-Dade Public School System for
13 years. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Nova
Southeastern University. She is a National Board Certified Teacher in
Library Media. Ms. Gomez provides information literacy skills and computer
training to students. She also teaches an advance Academic Excellence
Program before school. As an active participant of Citibank FamilyTech
Program, she was an Impact II Disseminator at the 2004 conference; and has
received and adapted several grants. Miriam provides opportunities for the
entire student sin her school to be involved in technology projects as part
of their information literacy curriculum.
