How It Works:
Where in the World is…Mister Panda is a basic geography skills unit
that promotes essential skills in geography while exploring the richness of
our multicultural world. Students will demonstrate a basic understanding of
research and geography skills. Where in the World is…Mister Panda introduces
the meaning/concept of cultural diversity, national traditions, economic
interdependence, and historical significance. Through this unit, students
will gain a greater appreciation for the various cultures and traditions
found around the world. Using new technologies, students will research and
create computer generated projects that reflects an appreciation for our
global society and a deeper cultural awareness. This unit incorporates
hands-on and project-based lessons to enhance student learning and critical
thinking skills.

Software Materials Used:

in instruction.

Students:
This project is suitable for the intermediate grades in elementary school,
but can be adapted for middle school students as well. The lessons take into
consideration the different learning styles of students. Students can be
grouped in order to complete projects or they can be done individually.
Students will need basic skills in reading and writing as well as
technology. These are regular education students in an urban, multicultural
school with a large ESOL population and low socioeconomic background. In
addition, these lessons can be modified for students with special needs or
special education.
Overall:
The intent of this project is to provide an opportunity for students to
gain an appreciation for the diversity of our Global Society. This unit
bridges the walls that often divides our world and expands the students’
understanding of the importance of tolerance and respect for the traditions
and culture of others. Through the use of new technologies, student can
experience first-hand the experiences of early immigrants. This project
integrates multimedia to both captivate and enhance the learning of
students. Students are engaged in a variety of tasks that are collaborating,
motivating, and meaningful.
Tips:
Conduct basic training on Internet navigation prior to beginning unit.
Review basic instructions in the software applications. Check all links to
make sure they are still active. Have all printables handouts or worksheets
ready for students. Share the rubrics provided for each project so that
students are well aware of expectations. Create a checklist of all necessary
materials and bookmark all Internet sites.

About the Teacher:
Morris Gil is in his 12th year in Miami Dade County Public
Schools. He is the Technology Resource Teacher at Fienberg Fisher
Elementary. He is responsible for all the technology training and
management of the school-wide network. Morris is also the Parent Trainer for
the Citibank FamilyTech program at his school.
He has been a Middle School Social
Studies Teacher and Team Leader. He has worked in the private sector as a
Training Specialist in Educational Technology. He holds a Master’s Degree
in Educational Leadership/School Administration.
