How It Works:
What's in a Word? is a unit that introduces children to different parts
of speech through the use of literature. Students use technology to visit
websites where they can play interactive games, gather information to
complete activity sheets, and complete online projects. In one lesson,
students use their knowledge of parts of speech to create an original
Cinquain Poem. They can visit a website where they do further reading and
write a reflection.
Standards:
The student understands the nature of language, recognizes basic patterns
in and functions of language.
Estimated Class Periods To Complete:
6
Software Materials Used:
Computer with Internet connection, Adobe Acrobat Reader
Keywords:
Parts of speech, nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, grammar.
Students:
This unit is designed for second/third grade students, however, it can be
easily adapted for higher grade levels. ESOL (English as a Second Language)
students may need additional help with vocabulary. The teacher may need to
modify some of the lessons in order to meet the needs of the students being
taught.
Overall:
This unit introduces a rather dry subject-grammar-in a unique and
entertaining way. Through the use of literature, students learn parts of
speech in context rather than as stand alone concepts.
Tips:
It would be helpful if students are trained in Internet Navigational
Skills and the use of Microsoft Word. Teacher should check the URLs provided
to make sure they are still active.
