Extension Activities

Math

*  Discuss the different ways that we can classify characteristics about ourselves that are perfect. (ex.  Green Eyes, Another Color of Eyes;  Short Hair, Long Hair; Brown Hair, Another Color of Hair; or Friendly, Not Friendly)

*  Students vote on what type of characteristics they want so they would be perfect.

*  Once they have chosen, they will keep a tally of the data (votes) collected on to a piece of paper.

*  Students will then make either a vertical or horizontal bar graph with the outcome of the vote using Microsoft Works/Spreadsheet/Chart.

*  Students will come up with three questions about their graph.

Language Arts

*  Students will compare/contrast Milo to themselves.  Demonstrate a Venn Diagram (compare/contrast) to the class and the students can go online to Venn Diagram to look at the graphic organizer that will help the students see more clearly the similarities and the differences between Milo and themselves.

*  Students will work in small groups to create a commercial to sell instructions on how to become perfect in just three days.  Have each group write a commercial and perform their commercial to the class.  Encourage the students to use props!

*  Students will work in groups to do a fun writing activity by creating a book similar to the main character in Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days.

*  Students could compare/contrast reasons why Milo should become perfect to why he shouldn't be perfect.  Students can go online to Venn Diagram to look at the graphic organizer that will help the students see more clearly the similarities and the differences between being perfect and not being perfect.

*  At a Learning Center, you can have questions that the students have to answer when they are finished with their work.

*  Students can work in cooperative groups to create their own book filled with advice for self-improvement.  They can use the following topics (Be a Nintendo Champion in Just...;  Be a Straight-A Student in Just...;  A Crash Course on Being a Chess Champion...;  Be the Teacher's Pet in Just...;  How to be Popular in Just...;  You Can Be Your Parent's Favorite Child in Just...) or have students create their own.

*  Students can write their own advisement that promises:

to help people lose weight

to help people gain weight

to help remove freckles

to make you a better ball player or swimmer

... or any other idea that they have that they want to "sell"

Science

*  Review the main food groups.  (Dairy, Meats, Fruit/Vegetables, etc...)

*  After surviving day two (Chapter 4), Milo learns that another quality of a perfect person needs is willpower.  Dr. Silverfish's regimen for day two includes a 24-hour fast.  After Milo fixes himself "an excellent supper" of his favorite foods.  On the day you plan to read chapter 4, bring in assortment of magazines that feature photographs of food, and a class supply of paper plates.  Give each student a plate.  Ask your students to think about which foods they would choose to eat if they had not eaten for a day.  Have each student search through the magazines for photographs of foods that he/she loves.  Have them cut out and glue each food on their plate.  Display all of your students' full plates on a table to compare excellent suppers.

Art

*  Upon completing the book, provide the students with art paper , scissors, and crayons.  Create a mini Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Person gallery by attaching illustrations to the wall, framing each with one-inch strips of brown construction paper.

*  Design a t-shirt that Dr. K. Pinkerton Silverfish might sell along with his book.
