How It Works:
You can count on learning fun when you use these lessons and activities to
teach or reinforce math concepts from one-to-one correspondence to
measurement. Students learn about shapes and create their own zoo animal
out of shapes. Students also explore a timely collection of activities to
help them race ahead to perfect time telling skills. You can bank on some
money activities to teach or strengthen money skills.
Keep students
measurement skills in tip-top shape with activities that really measure up.
Your students will learn their numbers with a tasty counting book. Use these
lessons to help students discover mathematical concepts in fun and creative
ways integrating technology. Students are sure to have a rootin'-tootin' time
with these great math activities.
Standards:
Know two-dimensional shapes describing
similarities and differences
Identify attributes of different shapes
Sort and classify objects by shapes
Identify, copy, extend and create simple patterns
Tell time to
the hour
Measure the length of objects using nonstandard units
Communicate measurement concepts
Write
numerals to 10 or more
Identify, sort, and classify pennies,
nickels, dimes and quarters and their value
Compare the value
of a penny, nickel, dime and a quarter
Estimated Class Periods To Complete:
10 or more
Software Materials Used:
Software needed to complete projects include KidPix, a word
processing program, a paint program and a spreadsheet program.
Keywords:
circle, rectangle, triangle, square, diamond, oval, edges,
sides, curves, pattern, repeat, numbers, hour, clock, minute hand, hour hand,

Students:
This unit is appropriate for the primary grades. The
lessons incorporate activities suitable for different learning styles. The
lessons can be adapted to work with small groups or large groups of students.
Students will need basic skills in reading, writing, math and technology. Some
lessons may require the help of parents or aids in the classroom since the
younger children may have difficulties with the computer.
Overall:
The unit gives students the opportunity to investigate,
explore and learn about different mathematical concepts in fun and meaningful ways and then take this information to create technology rich projects.
Tips:
Conduct basic training on Internet navigation prior to
beginning this unit. Bookmark and check all links to make sure they are still
active. Have all printables ready for students. Provide students with
mini-lessons on using KidPix and other programs you will utilize.
