Component: Measurement
Objectives:
The student will select and use appropriate instruments and
technology, including a scale
model and gauges to measure in real-world situations.
The student will measures distance.
The student will design experiments to answer questions.
Materials: computer, Microsoft Word, printer and paper
Procedure:
1) Click on Microsoft Word.
2) Click on the chart button.
3) Hi-light it.
4) Enlarge it by changing it to 100% or dragging the corner to the desired size.
5) Type North, South, East, and West in the appropriate areas.
6) Name the streets and avenues.
7) In tables and borders you can write the streets vertically.
8) Use the auto shape button to make buildings and houses.
9) Name the buildings.
10) To add color, click the building, then click on the paint brush or the color chart.
11) Add the distance such as miles, kilometers, or blocks on the map.
The students will then write their own questions to the maps. Some examples are:
1) In
which direction would you go from......?
2) What is the shortest distance from the....building to the school?
3) How many miles is it from.......to......?
4) Is it shorter to go from....to.....or from....to......?
Evaluation:
The student will answer his or her own
questions on the back of the map
and then swap it in order to allow another student to answer. If the questions
and answers are correct, a grade is based on that.
Homework:
Create a map on the home computer of a theme
park, adding distance,
rides, food concessions, etc.
Extensions:
*Write to the map maker at the local
newspaper and ask him or
her to explain what is necessary to learn in order to have that job.
*Make a topography map from the one made on the computer,
using miniature houses from games.
*Make a map on a sidewalk using chalk.
