Splendid China

How It Works:
Splendid China is a multicultural unit that explores the splendor and beauty of China. Students will explore the country of the China as an introduction to the people, animals, and geography of this vast continent rich in history and tradition. Using new technologies, students will research and create multimedia presentations representing all aspects of life in China. This unit incorporates hands-on and project-based lessons to enhance student learning and critical thinking skills.

Standards:

Social Science:
Demonstrate their understanding of the physical landscape of China by using a variety of materials to create a physical map of China. Identify the major geographic characteristics of China. Identify and label the major landforms and waters of China Demonstrate understanding of Chinese folktales by creating own folktale. Explore the history in building of the Great Wall. Identify major contributions of the Chinese civilizations (inventions/discoveries). Explore the habitat of the Giant Panda.

Technology:
Select and use appropriate tools and technology resources to accomplish a variety of tasks. Select and use a variety of web resources to gather appropriate data. Use graphics programs for a variety of purposes including multimedia. Use integrated software packages.

Estimated Class Periods To Complete:  10 or more.

Software Materials Used:
Digital video camera, scanner, color printer, internet connection, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Publisher, Print Shop, worksheets, rulers, maps, globes.

Students:
This project is designed for 6th grade geography students, but can be modified for lower grades.

Overall:
The intent of this project is to provide an opportunity for students to gain an appreciation for the traditions and vast contributions of the Chinese culture. China is a country rich in traditions and history, and provides an excellent beginning for multicultural studies. After centuries of secrecy and seclusion, China has opened its doors to the people of the world. This unit opens the eyes and minds of students to the world that exist outside and hopefully stimulates their interest in exploration and new discoveries. This unit helps bridge the physical and political walls that divide the cultures of the world. Through the use of new technologies, student can experience first-hand life the splendor, beauty, and achievements of the Chinese people. This project integrates multimedia to both captivate and enhance the learning of students. Students are engaged in a variety of tasks that are collaborating, motivating, and meaningful.

About the Teacher: 
Morris Gil is in his 10th year in Miami Dade County Public Schools. He is the Technology Resource Teacher at Fienberg Fisher Elementary. He is responsible for all the technology training and management of the school-wide network. He has been a Middle School Social Studies Teacher and Team Leader. He has work in the private sector as a Training Specialist in Educational Technology. He holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership/School Administration.
