On The Farm

How It Works: 
Curly-tailed pigs oink. Grazing cows moo. Wooly sheep baa and web-footed ducks quack. Welcome your class to the amazing world of farming through this fun and enriching unit. Students will learn about different farm animals. They will investigate how things grow and change and will explore a delightful range of delicious dairy products. Students will also appreciate the hard work it takes to be a farmer.

Are you curious to investigate what the life of a farmer is like? Have you ever wandered what it would be like to live and work at the farm?

So graze on over and explore every nook and cranny down on the farm!


Standards:
Know that there are many different kinds of living things that live in a variety of environments.
Know characteristics of animals who live in the farm.
Know how animals are used to produce goods.
Describe how animals change as they grow and mature.
Know that living things have offspring that resemble their parents.
Understand that many people work in jobs in which they produce special goods.

Software Materials Used: 
Software needed to complete projects include multimedia presentation software such as KidPix, and a word processor with spreadsheet program such as ClarisWorks, AppleWorks, Microsoft Excel, etc.

Students:
This unit is appropriate for the primary grades. The lessons incorporate activities suitable for different learning styles. The lessons can be adapted to work with small groups or large groups of students. Students will need basic skills in reading, writing and technology. Some lessons may require the help of parents or aids in the classroom since the younger children may have difficulties with the computer or basic reading and writing skills.

Overall:
The purpose of this unit is to give students the opportunity to investigate and explore life on the farm and then take this information to create technology rich projects.

Tips:
Conduct basic training on Internet navigation prior to beginning unit. Bookmark and check all links to make sure they are still active. Have all printables ready for students. Mini-lessons on using Kid Pix are also important before students begin their projects.

About the Teacher: 
Terry Garcia is a creative kindergarten teacher who is constantly seeking for meaningful activities in order to motivate and inspire her students. She has been teaching in the Miami-Dade Public School System for nine years. She received her Bachelor's Degree from Florida International University and has a Master's Degree in Mathematics through Florida State University. She has been a part of the Citibank Family Tech program for five years.
