Parts of a Plant

Objectives:

• Students will identify the parts of a plant and their functions.

Time Required:

• Three one-hour sessions

Vocabulary:

• stem - carries water and minerals from roots to leaves, holds the leaves and flowers up.

• leaves - make food for a plant to live and grow.

• flower - hold the parts of the plant that help it make more plants.

• roots - find and take in the water and minerals that a plant needs to live and grow.  Roots also hold the plant in place.

• seeds - have the job of making new plants.

Materials:

• PowerPoint Presentation

• Computer With Internet Access

• Plant

• any book publishing program

• word processing program

Procedures:

• Introduce plants by using the Power Point Presentation.  Discuss plants, their parts, and their uses.

• Use a plant for students to observe and help them identify the different parts of the plant.   Discuss which ones are visible and which ones are not ( you might want to show a rooted plant to show the roots).  Discuss and review what each part is responsible for.

• Revisit K-W-L and write new information students have learned.

Evaluation:

• Students will create a brochure with the parts of  a plant using Publisher, ClarisWorks, The Writing Center, or any other book publishing program.

Extension Activity:

• Students can play Plant Concentration.  Ahead of time, prepare a card with a plant part and another card with information about the plant part.  Students turn the cards face down and they have to match them. 

• Students can also create their own plant part cards:  Name on front of card and what it does on the back using any word processing program.  Have students type the information and print.  Have them cut out the information and glue to index cards or tag board for durability.  Cards can be laminated and added to the science center.

• Students can also play Garden Concentration online.

Home Learning:

• Students will create a Haiku about plants using any word processing software.  Students can also add illustrations to their poem.  Click here to view examples of Haikus created by other students.
