Unit Overview

Goal: Students will become familiar with money.

 Standards Addressed:

  1. Uses a variety of strategies estimates length, width, time intervals, and money and compares them to actual measurements.
  2. Understands and applies the concepts of counting (by 2s, 3s, 5s, 10s, 25s, 50s), grouping, and place value with whole numbers between 0 and 100. 
  3. Uses number patterns and the relationships among counting, grouping, and place value strategies to demonstrate an understanding of the whole number system.
  4. Adds and subtracts whole numbers to solve real-world problems using appropriate methods of computing, such as objects, mental mathematics, paper and pencil, and calculator.
  5. Provides and justifies estimates for real-world quantities.

Objectives:  

  1. Identifies the importance of money in everyday life.
  2. Identifies the name and value of each coin.
  3. Writes amounts using $ and decimal point.
  4. Shows how different combinations of coins equal the same amounts of money.
  5. Learns to work out real life problems with money.
  6. Uses various strategies to solve money problems. 
  7. Estimates whether items can be purchased with a given amount of money.
  8. Practices bar graphs with money.

Unit Assessment:

Students will be assessed through teacher observation, center activities, and  written assignments..
