A Dollar for Penny
Objective: Students become familiar with different ways to make a dollar. Students practice counting and recognizing combined values of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters to $1.00. Students learn about the decimal and dollar sign.
Materials: A Dollar for Penny by Julie Glass, computer with Internet connection, Ways to Make a Dollar activity sheet.
Book Overview:
Penny has a lemonade stand. She begins by charging one cent, then two,
then a nickel and so on. At the end of the day, Penny counts her
money and is happy to find she has earned 100 cents, a dollar.
Introduction:
Begin by reviewing previous lesson on
value of coins. Elicit responses from students as to the value of the coins. Ask
students if they can think of different ways to make a dollar. Introduce
story. Discuss with students what coins Penny had that made up a
dollar. Talk further about combinations of coins that can make up a
dollar. Model for students on board.
Web Activities:

Dimes, Nickels and Pennies. Using this information and practice, they will
answer questions and think up and record different ways
they find to make a dollar on the Ways
to Make a Dollar activity sheet.
Assessment:
Activity sheet will be used for assessment.
