Deena's Lucky Penny

Objective:  Students continue to learn to identify the name and value of coins:  Quarter, penny, dime and nickel.

Materials:  Deena's Lucky Penny by Barbara Derubertis, computer with Internet connection, Coin Matching activity, and Coins for Teaching. print-out.

Book Overview:
Penny's mom has a birthday coming up. She finds a penny and with a little help from friends and family trades up until her penny becomes a dollar.  This is the flip side of the poem Smart and is good to use as follow-up lesson to further understanding.

Introduction:
Begin by reviewing previous lesson on value of coins.  Elicit responses from students as to the value of the coins.  Introduce story by telling students that this girl was Smarter than our boy in Shel Silverstein's Smart poem.  Ask them to listen and think about why.  Read the story.  Discuss with class why the girl was smarter. Go through story once again and ask students to show how she traded up amounts.

Web Activities:
Students  will visit the Counting Coins website and choose the matching option. They will play and  use the Coin Matching activity. Give each student one copy of Coins for Teaching.  They will cut out coins and glue them to show amounts.  This will be turned in for assessment.

Assessment:
Coin Matching Activity will be used for assessment.

Home Learning:
