The Big Buck Adventure

 

Objective:  Students become familiar with making change.  They practice adding and subtracting money. 

Materials:  The Big Buck Adventure  by Shelley Gil,  computer with Internet connection, television hooked up to computer.  

Book Overview:  
A little girl sets out on an enjoyable shopping afternoon.  Soon, however, she is overwhelmed with all of the choices she must make.  

Introduction: 
Begin by asking students why they think it is  important to know how to add and subtract money.  Ask them where they think they will use this out in the real world.  Prompt students, if needed, to come up with shopping ideas.  Introduce the story of The Big Buck Adventure.  Read the story.  Discuss with students why it is important to know what change you must receive when you buy something.  Using the television that is connected to computer, show students The Family Education Network. On the board model how students would go about figuring out their change.  Do a few problems with the class.  

Web Activities:   
Students will visit Adding Money in order to practice.  Next, they will go to Word Problems and complete the Big Buck Adventure Activity.  

Assessment:
Teacher can create a quiz with word problems for students to be assessed.  

Home Learning:
Students complete a story map of The Big Buck Adventure.
