Note:

ACTIVITY #1 Making A Honey Bee
Duration:
1-2 hour periods
Objectives:
w The student characterizes the parts of a bee and its functions.
Materials:
Topic Books, construction paper, glue, scissors, play-doh,
Activities:
1. The student will review the body of a bee
using books and discuss
with their groups the function of each body part.
2. The student will construct a
model of a bee using construction
paper.
Option: The student can make a model of a bee using play-doh.
3. Label each part when model is finished.
4. Take digital picture to print off the computer for portfolio.
Assessment:
Student will present the completed model of a bee showing all its
parts.
ACTIVITY #2 Making A Honeycomb
Duration:
1-2 hour periods
Objectives:
w
The student describes, draws, identifies, and analyzes three
dimensional shapes.
w
The student describes, analyzes and generalizes patterns, relations
and
functions.
w The student identifies proper unit of measure for a given situation
Materials:
Topic Books, construction paper, glue, scissors, play-doh, Optional: bendable straws, hexagon blocks, rulers.
Activities:
Model A
1. The student will review the comb the bee
makes. Discuss with
their groups the function of the comb and why bees use this
shape.
2. The student will construct a
model of a comb by tracing a
hexagon block on construction paper. Optional: Have them
make their own hexagons
using a ruler.
3. Cut the hexagons and glue on another piece of paper making a
pattern
like a comb.
4. Students can try making different patterns.
5. Scan completed diagram to print off the computer for portfolio.
Model B
1. The student will construct a
model of a comb using bendable
straws.
2. Stick the bendable part of one
straw into the next straw and keep
adding straws until a hexagon has been formed.
3. Tape each hexagon together to make the comb.
4. Take digital picture to print off the computer for portfolio.
Assessment:
Student will present the completed model of a comb.
ACTIVITY #3 Compare and Contrast A Bee and A Wasp
Duration:
1-2 hour period
Objectives:
w
The student understands the different classifications of insects within
the same
order
Materials:
Topic Books, pictures, paper, pencil
Activities:
1. The student will review the body parts of an insect.
2. The students will work in pairs. Using a Venn diagram compare
and contrast
the pictures of a bee and a wasp. (you may copy a
set of pictures for each team
to glue on their Venn diagram.)
3. Check this site for more pictures. Pollinator

ACTIVITY #4 Making Banana Pops
Duration:
1-2 hour periods
Objectives:
w The student identifies proper unit of measure for a given situation.
w
The student understands that honey is a product of bees and people
consume it.
Materials:
toasted
almonds, toasted coconut, candy sprinkles or graham
cracker crumbs
Activities:
1. Review the way bees make honey.
2. Review how Mary Ellen and her grandpa searched for honey.

3. Discuss the many uses of honey and how important it is to people.
2. The student will make a nutritious banana pop using different
measuring
devices.
Honey Recipes
Banana Pops
You'll need:
1-1/3
cups topping, such as ground toasted
almonds, toasted coconut, candy sprinkles or graham
cracker crumbs

just-ripe bananas, peeled

wooden craft sticks
1/2
cup honey
Spread
toppings of your choice on a plate or plates. Cut bananas in half crosswise.
Insert a craft stick into each cut end. To assemble, hold 1 banana over plate or
waxed paper to catch drips. Spoon about 1 Tbsp. honey over banana, rotating and
smoothing honey with back of spoon to coat all sides. (Or squeeze honey from a
plastic honey bear container and smooth out with spoon.) Roll banana in topping
of choice until coated on all sides, pressing with fingertips to help topping
adhere. Place pops on waxed paper-lined cookie sheet. Repeat with remaining
bananas, honey and toppings. Serve at once.

ACTIVITY #5 Writing A New Adventure
Duration:
2 hour period
Objectives:
w
The student understands the development of the bee and the
importance of its
wings.
w The student will write, revise and publish a narrative in a group.
Materials:
The Adventures of Binx. Visit Sue Bee. Copy Story.
Activities:
1. The student will read story The Adventures of Binx.
2. Discuss with the group what would happen if bees never grow
their
wings.
3. The students will write a group story: A New Adventure for Binx.
4. Revise and Edit to share with the class.
5. Students will type edited story in the computer.
Optional: Submit story to Kid Authors
Assessment:
Student will present the completed narrative.
