Lesson 3: Seven Day Road Trip 

Objectives: The student measures quantities in the real world and uses the measure to solve problems.  The student selects the appropriate operation to solve real world problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers. 

Materials:  state road map, paper, pencil, calculator, highlighter, spreadsheet, charts and graph software, book marked Web sites

Activity:  The student will plan a seven-day driving trip to at least five major cities and/or attractions in Florida or state of their choice.  each student will highlight the entire trip on their road map and calculate the distances to be traveled each day.  Students will use various Web sites to assist in the planning of their driving trip. Students visit  Florida USA  to learn about Florida. Students can use the spreadsheet application of various software programs to complete math calculations and create matching charts and graphs.

*More capable students will calculate amounts of gas needed for the trip and the cost of the gas for the trip.

Evaluation:  Each student will have his or her seven-day road trip highlighted on their map denoting the daily miles traveled. 

Extension Activity: Determine the Weather on Your Driving Trip

Homework: Students determine how far their home is from their school, shopping mall and other locations. Log onto Yahoo , click on maps, and type addresses. Click on Get Map and a map with distance legend is displayed.
