How It Works:
In this unit, students will design a floor plan and construct their dream home
using geometry. Students will
learn about different types of polygons, two and three- dimensional figures
and how to measure perimeter and area. They
will also review multiplying money.
This unit is very hands-on!
In one lesson, the students will visit several stores or view
various websites to shop for clothes. They need to purchase several items and
they cannot exceed a certain amount of money. This activity is fun for the
students because they get to go window-shopping online.
Standards:
Make and identify polygons, plane figures and two-dimensional figures.
Use and identify geometric terms, such as, point, line,
line segment, ray, and angles, intersecting lines, perpendicular lines and
parallel lines.
Measure perimeter and find area.
Learn and identify space figures (3-dimensional figures).
Explore faces, edges and vertices.
Multiply with money and use money to solve problems.
Estimated number of class periods for students to
complete this project:

Software and Materials Used:
geoboards, graph paper, measuring tape, rulers, money, newspaper flyers,
Internet connection, currency, desktop publishing software
Keywords:
Geometry, hands-on activity, real-word problems, two-dimensional,
three-dimensional, vertices, polygons, parallel, plane, multiplication
Students:
The students involved in the project were very eager 4th graders. They
love working with hands-on activities. All
the students had a basic knowledge of geometry and multiplication.
Overall Value:
This is a practical mathematics unit that involves students in real-world
problems.
Tips:
Have materials precut out and organized in order to be time efficient. Book
mark various mathematics web sites. You can purchase currency kits for the
hands-on money activities. Create multiplication flash cards using index
cards.
