People and Population

Almost all of England’s people live in urban areas. Greater London is the largest metropolitan area in England and one of the largest such areas in the world. It has about 6 1/2 million people. Up to the mid-1800’s, most of the English people lived in the country, far from the city. Many people moved to cities and towns to work in factories, mines, and mills. During the 1800’s and early 1900’s millions of people left to live in other places. From the 1900’s to the 1960’s, the number of people moving to England was more than those leaving. Since the 1970’s, the number of people leaving England has been larger than the number of people entering England. Some of the people in England have gone to live in the United States, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Many famous people like Robin Hood and the Pilgrims have come from England.
