In the old days Irish foods were very simple. It consisted of soups and stews made with fresh ingredients. The potato has always been a traditional food and can be found in most dishes. Some examples are colcannon and  boxty

Between  1846 and 1850 there was a widespread famine in Ireland due to black rot which covered most of the potatoes. Many people died and thousands emigrated to other countries, especially to the United States of America.

Irish stew  is delicious and easy to make and is often enjoyed with a large piece of Irish soda bread.

Today there is a wide variety of foods and restaurants in Ireland  giving visitors many  delicious choices.
