Ireland occupies about 80% of the island that lies to the west of Great Britain, which is about 27137 sq. miles (70284sq. km). Most of central Ireland is covered by lowlands. Lowlands include forests but mostly farms. Most of the mountains are near the coastland and surround the lowlands. The highest peak is in Mt. Kerry and it is 3414 ft. high (1041m). The Shannon River is Ireland’s longest river. (230miles/370km). The Liffey River begins in Mt. Wicklow and at its end forms Dublin Bay.

Most of Ireland’s lakes are in the West. The three major lakes (The Loughs) are Lough Allen, Lough Ree, and Lough Dorg.

Ireland has a mild but wet climate. The average temperature in the winter is 41 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius). In the summer the average temperature is 59 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius). In July the sun is up until 11:00pm. Because of the chilly climate, although they have beaches, they probably don’t use them. So Ireland is very different from Florida.
