Research on the Internet- a
guide
Rules:
1. Do not plagiarize .
You must read over material and then take notes on the text you are reading,
writing in your own words. If a you find something that you want to copy then
you must enclose the words you copy in quotations marks and footnote it if you
use it in this form.
2. Give credit to your
sources. Remember to copy the URL, the source of what you are reading, to use
as a footnote, if necessary, and also in you bibliography.
Finding
material:
1. Library databases:
Libraries in New York City have excellent databases for all kinds of research
including magazine and nespapers. Depending on your library card type in
queenslibrary.org or brooklynpubliclibrary.org. Experiment by trying different
databases and type in your library card number. Or go to the subject
categories and do a search.
2.Internet sites:
Internet sites can be excellent sources of information but you have to be
careful of sites that have a bias or inaccurate information. Some sites may
not be reputable. Different search engines include
http://google.com - excellent for social studies
assignments. Type in + between words to limit the "hits" to a managable
number.
http://askjeeves.com - good for health topics. Just type in a
question.
http://collegeonline.org/library/research-tools/librarian-searchguide - a librarian explains how to
