Caterpillars and butterflies are fascinating to observe. Butterflies have beautiful wings and just like a snowflake, no two butterflies have the same pattern on their wings. Isn't it quite enjoyable to watch caterpillars climbing up a branch or nibbling on a leaf? I wonder how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly?
OH
MY!...
A butterfly just
happened to land on Miss Butterpillar's nose and does not remember who he
is. Miss Butterpillar is looking for your help and research skills to help
this butterfly understand who he is! All he remembers is that his name is
Peter.

Now, imagine that a
butterfly landed on you and does not remember who he is, how he became a
butterfly, what his cousin likes to eat, why his wings are the same on each
side, and where he is supposed to travel. You will be going on a journey
to teach Peter the Butterfly who he is and where he came from. These are
all of the questions that Peter asked Miss Butterpillar. So, now she is
looking for you to help him remember who he is by researching specific
information and presenting it to him.

1. Get
together with your assigned partner.
2. Write your
names on the provided folder to keep your work organized. As you complete
each assignment, place in folder.
3. With your
partner, read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle located in your
Reading Anthology. Discuss the story with your partner recalling what Peter's
cousin, the Very Hungry Caterpillar, ate.
4. Upon reading
"The Very Hungry Caterpillar", click on the caterpillar to recall information
from the story. How well did you remember what the Very Hungry Caterpillar
ate? Click on the pencil to print and complete the worksheet to find out
how well you recalled the information.
5. Now you can
explain to Peter what his cousin the Very Hungry Caterpillar enjoys to eat, but
there is still quite a bit of information you need to research for Peter so he
can remember who he is. Peter would like to know what is so special about
his wings. Click on the butterfly to see detailed photographs of
butterflies and their symmetrical wings. While you are observing the
wings, ask your partner what is so unique about the wings. Are they the
same on each side or different?
Then click on the pencil to print and
complete the symmetry on the butterfly's wing.
Last, go on to KidPix or
Kidspiration and create a symmetrical butterfly. Your slide should include
your name, illustration, and at least two sentences describing your butterfly.
6. How did Peter become a
butterfly? Wasn't he a caterpillar first? To find out, first click
on the magnifying glass to observe detailed photographs on how a caterpillar
becomes a butterfly.
Then, click on the butterfly to print and read the
stages of a monarch butterfly.
Last, click on the scissors to print out the
directions to make a life cycle of a butterfly. Go to the Art Center to
create your project.
Upon completion, you will be able to use your art
project to explain to Peter how he became a butterfly.
7. Miss Butterpillar would
like you to have some fun with a few butterfly games. Click on the words
"Butterfly Word Search" to print out and complete.
Then click on the word
"Puzzle" to play a game in which you click and drag pieces to complete a
butterfly puzzle.
Next, Click on the word "Concentration" to play a Butterfly
Concentration Game.
Last, upon completion of all three games print out the
"Games Worksheet". Complete and remember to place worksheet in your
folder.
8. Wow, you are almost
ready to help Peter remember everything about himself. The last thing you
need to do is research where Peter goes in the Fall. In order to do this
you must click on the globe. Remember to observe the migration!
Last,
click on the paper to print and complete the migration worksheet. Remember
to place worksheet in your folder when completed.

Miss Butterpillar is
counting on you to help out poor Peter! Are you able to fully explain who
Peter the Butterfly is, where he travels, why his wings are identical, and how
he went from being a caterpillar to becoming a butterfly? Peter is
anxiously waiting to find out if you were able to answer all of his questions
from your research. Gather your information, make sure it is neat and
organized in your folder, and then you may go and share your findings with Peter
the Butterfly!
CONGRATULATIONS!!
