Ben and Jerry's Web Site

Ben & Jerry's Website:  A Cool Way to Reinforce Language Arts Skills and Work Toward Computer Proficiency by Julie Vitulano, New York City Public Schools.

Lesson >> 1

This English Language Arts program is designed for high school students, although it can be adapted for middle school students as well. The ultimate goal of the lesson is for the students to be able to write a well-constructed essay for which they have completed Internet research. To do this, the students use the website of the Ben & Jerry's ice cream company. This website is beautifully designed and well-maintained. It is the perfect site to serve as the foundation for writing an essay about factual information.

The program includes five 40-minute lessons. The lessons may take longer to complete than 40 minutes, depending on the computer skills of the students.

Targeted skills:

  • Completing an Internet Treasure Hunt
  • Creating an Internet Treasure Hunt
  • Redesigning a Timeline
  • Writing an Essay for a Standardized Test
  • Reviewing Peer's Essay
Technology Components: Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Website
  • Computers with Internet Access and E-mail
  • Paintbrush or Other Computer Graphics Program
  • Computer Projector
