Teachers Network: Adaptor Grants: Welcome To Space

Adapted By:
Rona Raines

Ms. Rianes has been teaching since 1970. Most of her teaching has been in Gifted and Talented classrooms, as it is with this class.

Modifications

We used Isabel's suggested websites as a starting point for our research. The children found 13 additional sites on their own. The excitement when a new site was discovered was amazing!

Instructional Objectives

That the children become familiar with locating information on the Internet.

That the children learn about the solar system.

That the children be able to use their research to produce a book.

Technology Integration

The entire project was based on using the Internet for research.

The following web sites were used:

www.Discovery.com
www.EnchantedLearning.com
www.Yahooligans.com Click on Ask Earl to ask a question.
www.NASAkids.com
www.MelbournePlanetarium.com
www.AskforKids.com
www.Yahookids.com
www.kidsastronomy.com
www.timeforkids.com
www.kidsknowit.com
www.google.com
www.nationalgeographic.com
www.Yahoo.com
www.The-Planet-Pluto.com
www.nineplanets.com
www.hao.ucar.org
www.kidshealth.org
www.auearth.com

Assessment

I was able to evaluate the success of the project by the ability of the students to use the information they gleaned in the production of their non-fiction books.

Tips for Teachers

Depending on the abilities of the class, there might need to be a lot of instruction on how to find useful sites. I was surprised to see that Isabel had done the Internet work with kindergarteners.
