[Name] Selected as MetLife Fellow in Teachers Network Leadership Institute [NAME] of [SCHOOL] has been chosen as a MetLife Fellow in the Teachers Network Leadership Institute (TNLI), an honor shared by hundreds of exemplary public school teachers across the nation. This select group of elementary, middle, and high school teachers represents twelve TNLI affiliates nationwide — Chicago (IL); Delaware; Fairfax County (VA); Gainesville (FL); Mason (VA); Miami/The Ed Fund (FL); Milwaukee (WI); New York City (NY); Sacramento (CA); San Francisco (CA); Santa Barbara County (CA); and Wyoming. In 1989, former President Bush and then Governor Clinton held the first education summit. Not one teacher was invited. Teachers Network Leadership Institute (TNLI) was established to improve student achievement by bringing the teachers' voice to education policymaking. Through action research, TNLI teachers seek to bring their experience and expertise to current debates on education policy. Since 1996, TNLI MetLife Fellows—teachers with full-time classroom teaching responsibilities—research policy issues and develop recommendations, document their work in papers and publications, and disseminate their work locally and nationally. Fellows’ action research studies address the direct link between policymaking and its effects on student achievement in their classrooms. The secret of success in the teaching profession is to continually grow and learn. Action research is a way to continue to grow and learn by making use of a teacher’s own experiences. TNLI recently developed How to Do Action Research in Your Classroom written by Frances Rust and Christopher Clark as a practical, hands-on guide for teachers interested in conducting action research in their classrooms. How to Do Action Research in Your Classroom is available as a free downloadable document or for purchase as a hard copy on TNLI’s website: www.teachersnetwork.org/tnli. In addition to TNLI’s newest publication, TNLI Director Ellen Meyers and TNLI Advisor Emeritus Frances Rust edited Taking Action with Teacher Research, published by Heinemann Press which contains six chapters focusing on action research studies conducted by TNLI MetLife Fellows. Two additional chapters focus on TNLI’s work and the action research process. Ellen Meyers relates that "this kind of teacher action research serves as the catalyst to forge meaningful conversations among parents, communities, and policymakers about what really works in education." TNLI works in partnership with New York University Steinhardt School of Education and the United Federation of Teachers. TNLI is a major initiative of Teachers Network, a non-profit organization—by teachers, for teachers—with a 26-year track record of success, dedicated to improving student learning in public schools nationally and internationally.
