This lesson was designed as
part of Clarkstown Central School District’s Instructional Technology Summer Workshop, August 2000.
This
lesson is designed to provide an opportunity for Earth Science students to
embark on an in-depth exploration of an historic geologic or natural hazard
event. During the course of the webquest, students will be asked to identify a specific type of hazard
and identify the “typical” consequences of such an event. Students will then be asked to identify
a single hazard event in the historical record and identify the specific causes,
impacts (human/environmental), human response, and subsequent mitigation efforts
(action plan) for the region affected by this hazard. Each group will also use information from a
recognized "expert" in a field related to Hazards, either through direct contact
or use of scientific journals. Students will use the internet and any
other research tools appropriate to the completion of this task. Evidence of student learning will
include a printed report (see
process), including the appropriate information, and a group report of a
traditional (written, oral) or technological (PowerPoint, Slides)
nature.
