STEP 1: After having discussed geologic hazards in class and lab, your group should be able to
answer the following questions:
 |
What is a hazard?
|
 |
What are some examples of hazards that we have
discussed in class?
|
 |
What are some examples of hazards we have NOT
discussed in
class?
|
**NOTE: You should use the WEB RESOURCES
found at the bottom of this page for this and all following steps to complete
this quest**
STEP 2:
IDENTIFICATION- As a group, you must
decide on the specific type of hazard you will explore during this
quest. Once you have done so, you must:
 |
identify at least 6
examples of this type of hazard;
|
 |
determine the
location, date, and cause of each
event;
|
 |
identify two impacts or consequences each event
had on
people.
|
STEP 3: Your next task is
to produce and complete an MS WORD document. This document will include
your answers to the above questions. It will also include a chart (see
sample below) that summarizes the information from your 6 examples. Additionally, each group will determine
the role its members will play throughout the remainder of the
project.

STEP 4: SELECTION of
EVENT- At this point, it is time to narrow down the
events in your WORD table to a single choice. Your group will take this
one event and perform in-depth research on that event that covers the following
areas:
 |
CHRONOLOGY of EVENT- Describe the circumstances surrounding this geologic event,
including any scientific research or analysis leading up to the
event.
|
 |
CAUSATION- What
earth-related processes were responsible for causing the EVENT you have
decided upon?
|
 |
IMPACTS- What are the
common or typical impacts associated with your type of event? What
were the specific impacts and consequences of your event on the
community/region in which the event
occurred?
|
 |
ANALYSIS- What human or
environmental conditions existed to create the impacts and consequences of
this event. Note that these can be positive (preventative measures)
or negative (disregard for nature).
|
 |
RESPONSE- What response, if any, has the
community/region affected by your hazard developed to mitigate future
events? Include any economic, health, geologic or environmental
considerations in this section.
|
STEP 5: ASK a
SCIENTIST- Using the links provided and
your own experience, contact a scientist in the fields of earth science,
hazards, or other related sciences to obtain information regarding your event.
This information could be in the form of an interview, email correspondence,
referencing a scientific paper, or other approved method (check with the teacher
for approval). This information must be included in the final
presentation.
STEP 6: FINAL REPORT- Your group compile all information in the form of a report.
This report may be presented in ANY of the following ways:
 |
PowerPoint
Presentation
|
 |
Website
|
 |
Oral presentation of a
written report
|
 |
Video, play or other media
presentation
|
Your final product must include
information from steps 4-6. Also, this presentation must make use of
multimedia- pictures, graphs/tables, video, audio, etc. You will be assessed
based on the evaluation
criteria found at this site.
