TeachNet NYC: Lesson Plans

Collecting Weather Data

HOME

Objective:

Your objective is to collect specific weather information from 5 cities within your chosen state. We will use this information to create a national weather map. We can then predict upcoming weather based on this map.

Weather Information to Collect:

  1. Temperature (F)
  2. Sky Conditions
  3. Visibility (mi)
  4. Dewpoint (F)
  5. Wind Speed (knots)
  6. Wind Direction (coming from)
  7. Amount of cloud cover (%)
  8. Barometric Pressure (mb)
  9. Barometric Trend (mb)
  10. Precipitation

Procedure:

    Part A: collecting data
  1. Read all Part A procedures first.
  2. Go to the National Weather Service website.
  3. Select your state.
  4. Select a location.
  5. Copy the necessary information onto your worksheet.
  6. Create a station model for each location.
  7. Repeat steps 3-6 for five different cities/regions.
  8. Click here for the National Weather Service.
    Part B: locating cities/regions
  1. Read all Part B procedures first.
  2. Print out a map of your state. Select "Black and white map."
  3. Now go to Lycos Road Maps to locate your 5 locations.
  4. Type in the address or city and the state and click "go get it!"
  5. Draw the station model onto your map print out in the approximate position.
