A Conceptual Approach to Teaching Anatomy

This series of sequential art lessons on human anatomy reinforce my students' Living Environment studies without teaching to the test. Applying the workshop model in the art classroom, students are actively engaged in creating drawings of the skeletal and musculature systems of the body. Inter-disciplinary, project-based visual art assignments reinforce students' science lessons while stressing cultural literacy and a strong visual communication skill set.

A Journey to Africa: Art and Artifacts

This project enables students to conduct Internet research on African culture by reading about and selecting a piece of art they find intriguing. They examine features and collect facts in order to create a PowerPoint presentation. The students bookmark appropriate websites so they can describe the piece they have chosen (its materials and features) as well as talk about its function, and then explain why they have chosen it.

A Mask for All Seasons

Students create plaster craft masks to depict the four seasons. By navigating various Web sites, they learn about Renaissance artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo and his "Season" series of floral faces. The students create symbolism in their masks through the use of collage materials.

A Venetian Carnival

An Alphabet Journey Through Space

This project draws upon your students' imaginations, and dares them to define their own learning experiences. They are immersed in a fantasy world, based on history, wandering upon an oracle bone in the Forbidden City in search of answers to their questions about China. Their virtual oracle bone becomes a metaphor for the World Wide Web, a powerful medium for finding information, inspiring creative writing, and learning about other cultures.
