Taylor School Garden Project
Water Gardens
At Taylor School we set up three barrel liners as a water garden. These "ponds" were used for experiments tied to our third grade life science standards.
The ponds were named. The students themselves decided what would go into each of the ponds. They decided that one of the ponds would have plants only. The other two ponds had both plants and fish. In one of the ponds water snails were deliberately added. The children selected which plants to put in each of the ponds.
Observations of many kinds were made by the students about the ponds.
The water level was measured and recorded regularly. Ambient temperature and water temperatures were compared and recorded. Some changes that the students observed include the changes in the water levels caused by evaporation and rain. Changes occurred in the plants. Some fish didn't survive, most of them are still swimming around and we believe that some hatched.
Many books are read and several videos are kept on hand about ponds and pond life.
Students have become experts and can explain different
features about our ponds to other teachers and their classes as well as
individual students that roam around with curiosity.
Gardening At Taylor School
Records are kept on charts and several different kinds of journals.
Some records are kept by photographing the ponds and other planting areas. The children eventually take the photographs on their own.
Students make presentations for other classrooms and help
younger students plant in their classrooms. These presentations include
demonstrations and Kid Pix plant diagrams and slide shows.
