These are the whalebones they used for a doorway

My Summary
Chumash Technology
by J. J.

Chumash Indians are people who lived in our land in the 1770'S. There still some Chumash Indians living here at this time. Some Chumash Indians live in Santa Inez, California.  They formed groups, which they called  tribes.  The Chumash Indians lived in houses called domes, which they made out of tule.  Their doorways were made out of whalebones. The domes had an opening in the roof to allow smoke to escape. They made fire inside when they were cold to stay warm.

The Chumash women made baskets used for food storage, also small ones used as plates.  The Chumash fished with a seine net, a hook line and a sinker.  They made their hooks of bent cactus spines, shell, wood and bones.  The Chumash made their own weapons like a knife from the foreleg of a deer; they also made their own arrows.  They used animal's skins and bones to make their tools. They made their canoes by hand, using stone, animal bones and clamshell scrapers.  To the Chumash it was more important to do a good job instead of a fast job.  It took them from 40 days to 6 months to make a canoe.

The Chumash traded a lot of what they had with other people for things they needed and did not have, including food. The Chumash made red paint from a red mineral hematite to paint in caves, their bodies and also to decorate what they made.
Some of the Highways we use today are old Chumash trade routes, like Highway 126 and Highway 1.

I learned that a lot of the Chumash Indians died by diseases brought by the Europeans I also learned that it is illegal to have a casino in the state of California but the Chumash Indians were allowed to open one, It is located In Santa Inez, Calfornia.

This is how they looked a long time ago and how they look now
